The Eastern Province Orchid Society

|
Eastern Province Orchid Society was founded in 1967 by a group of persons determined to get orchid growing established in Port Elizabeth and its surrounds. The society has grown steadily over the years and presently boasts one hundred and twenty six members. Monthly meetings featuring an out of town or local speaker are held at the Newton Park library and are well attended. The subjects covered at these meetings, usually supported by a slide show, offer something for all - no matter what one grows. Members are encouraged to bring along plants in flower for the table where they are discussed either by a judge, if present, or by the more experienced growers. The standard of the plants is good with visiting speakers often commenting on the high standard of plants on the table. The society is driven by a dedicated committee and volunteers who ensure that everything runs smoothly - from the annual show to the selection of speakers for the monthly meeting. EPOS also runs a shop for its members where orchid growing requirements can be bought at a discount. Potting demonstrations and culture hints are held for new members. Greenhouse visits and field trips are arranged from time to time. At the end of the year a celebratory function in the form of a sit down meal is held and trophies handed out to the winners of the Spring Show.
